How does a Water Rocket work?

The water rocket moves in a way very similar to other toys, except that it uses Mr. Widget demonstrates how a rocket fliesinexpensive air and water, instead of money and batteries.  To better understand how the rocket works, let's first examine these other toys.
A typical toy uses money (in the form of batteries) as fuel. This fuel quickly exits the rear of the toy in the form of dead batteries, causing it to move forward toward the garbage can.  Some of these toys are very powerful, and make loud noises such as talking repetitively, emergency sirens or gun sounds etc.  The louder the noise the toy makes, the more quickly it travels toward the trash.
The water rocket works on a much better principle, in that its target is the sky rather than the trash can, and instead of money, it uses much cheaper household materials such as air.  And, as the very name water rocket implies, you will need to provide a suitable liquid, such as pop.


Where will the rocket come down?

Our rockets have been specially designed so that once they have gone as far up as they can go, they automatically turn around and begin to come down.  Not all rockets do this.  Some really big ones keep going until they are in orbit, a definite disadvantage if you want to have more fun launching them again.
From the peak of its trajectory, the physical characteristics of the flight will have already determined the water rocket's touchdown target, i.e. anyone talking on a cell phone.  A good general rule is to never bring your cell phone to an afternoon of water rocketing or the water rocket will hit the top of your head.  This is because of gravitational force. Rocket going up When you see people talking on their cell phones out in the field when they should be having fun, they always have a look of gravity.   You'll hear a distinct whooshing sound just before impact, if everthing is working properly.
Our rockets have a bumper on the front.  It struck us as a bright idea, while we were talking on our cell phone.
When the rocket comes back down, what happens at impact?

The fins are held onto the water rocket with elastic bands.  You could think of the fins as a pair of stretch pants with an elastic waistband.Rocket coming back down
     When we suddenly eat a large amount of food, the elastic waistband instantly absorbs the shock by changing shape and size while the rest of the pants stretch and move to accomodate the new requirements.  Nothing breaks, and soon we return to normal, ready for another shock to the system.
At the top of the person doing the eating, there is chewing taking place to soften things up and lessen the impact and damage to the system.  The rocket also has a system at the top to soften things up and lessen the impact and damage to the system, called a bumper.  Ironically, things would be more likely to get chewed up without the bumper in place.  But as such, the landing is always soft and nothing breaks, unless you drop your cell phone.


What will a water rocket do for me?

The water rocket can bring you many unexpected benefits, including, in some cases, wealth, power and fame.  Let's see how it works.
     Through your own effort you cause the rocket to travel way up into the sky, higher than you ever dreamed you could fly an empty beverage container.  This causes emotions you haven't felt in a long time, amazement and exhilaration, especially if people are watching.  Regardless of what the bystanders are really thinking, this boosts your ego and increases personal confidence.  Soon, you get off of your elastic waistband and demand that big raise or promotion that you should have asked for long ago.
  Of course, we can't guarantee the outcome of personal  or business matters such as this.  We can, however, tell you one thing for sure.  Don't ask for your raise or promotion on a cellphone with dead batteries while your rocket is still up in the air.  Or you might be struck by a bright idea.
